Hapur (UP), Sep 8 (PTI) Two suspected cattle smugglers were arrested following an exchange of fire with police in Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur district, officials said on Tuesday. Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Vineet Bhatnagar said the encounter took place late Monday night when a police team was conducting checking on a road.
The suspects opened fire at the police team, following which police retaliated in self defence, he said.
One of the accused, identified as Bilal, sustained a bullet injury and was arrested along with his associate Zaheer, the ASP said.
Police recovered illegal firearms, cartridges and equipment used for animal slaughter from their possession, officials said.
During questioning, the two accused confessed to their involvement in two incidents of cattle slaughter in the forests of Khilwai and Allahbakshpur, police said. Garhmukteshwar police station Station House Officer Devendra Bisht said Bilal and Zaheer have around two dozen criminal cases registered against them in Hapur and Amroha districts. PTI COR ABN DV DV
