Kasaragod (Keralam), Aug 23 (PTI) Two persons were arrested on Sunday for allegedly honey-trapping a businessman and extorting money from him at Kubanoor here, police said.

Kumbla police arrested Kubanoor native Hasan Asif (33) and his relative Muhammad Siraj (32), a native of Mogral.

According to police, the incident took place on August 16 when the 64-year-old complainant, a resident of Muttam Bangara in Mangalpady village, was invited by a woman, Riswana, to her house in Kubanoor on the pretext of returning Rs 5,000 she had borrowed from him.

Upon his arrival at around 7.30 pm, Asif, allegedly acting in collusion with Riswana, forcibly took him to a bedroom, police said.

Siraj allegedly recorded photographs and videos of the complainant on a mobile phone.

The accused allegedly seized the complainant’s mobile phone, Rs 1,500 in cash and his car keys. They then opened his vehicle parked outside and allegedly took another mobile phone valued at Rs 25,000, along with ATM cards, according to the FIR.

The accused allegedly threatened the complainant, obtained his ATM PINs and withdrew Rs 7,200 from his account, police said.

On August 17, Asif allegedly visited the complainant’s shop, intimidated him and extorted an additional Rs 5,000.

Police said Asif allegedly demanded Rs 20 lakh, threatening to circulate the photographs and videos on social media.

The complainant reported the matter to police on Saturday, citing delays caused by continuous threats from the accused.

Police said they were probing the role of Riswana, who is being questioned as part of the investigation.

A case has been registered against Riswana, Asif and Siraj under Sections 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 308(2) (extortion), 310(1) (robbery or dacoity), 351(2) (criminal intimidation) and 3(5) (joint liability) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). PTI TBA SSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
