Jammu, Aug 15 (PTI) A 108-foot-high national flag mast was installed in Kachrial village along the Line of Control in Jammu district on Saturday as part of Independence Day celebrations, following a 1.5 km Tiranga march organised by the Army, officials said.
The march began with ex-servicemen and primary school students of Pallanwala carrying the tricolour through the historic border region to commemorate the 80th Independence Day, they said.
The march culminated in Kachrial with the hoisting of the tricolour on the 108-foot-high mast, followed by a ceremonial salute and singing of the National Anthem, they added.
Overlooking the expansive plains of Chhamb, the towering flag mast stands as a symbol of India’s sovereignty, the sacrifices of the armed forces and the nation’s unwavering spirit, officials said.
The event was followed by a tree plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.
For the participating veterans, the occasion was a tribute to the soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the country, particularly in the strategically significant Chhamb region, they added.
Addressing the gathering, a representative of the ex-servicemen community recalled the valour and sacrifices of generations of soldiers and emphasised the responsibility of citizens to uphold the unity, integrity and democratic values of the nation. PTI AB AB AMJ AMJ
