New Delhi, Jul 28 (PTI) A massive tree fell onto two parked autorickshaws in south Delhi’s Shahpur Jat on Tuesday afternoon, damaging both vehicles and causing traffic disruption on August Kranti Marg, police said.
The drivers escaped unhurt as they had stepped away for lunch moments before the incident, they said.
The tree fell around 1 pm near the road leading to Hauz Khas Police Station, after heavy rain earlier in the day.
“I had just gone to have lunch when the tree fell. The auto has suffered damage of around Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000. It’s a loss for us, but thankfully there was no loss of life or injury. If we had been inside, who knows what would have happened,” Avinash Kumar Gupta, one of the autorickshaw drivers, told PTI.
A senior police officer said the autorickshaw drivers had parked their vehicles and gone to a nearby eatery when the tree suddenly collapsed.
“No one was trapped under the tree or injured in the incident,” the officer said, adding that local police, traffic personnel and the horticulture department reached the spot and began clearing the fallen tree.
Traffic on August Kranti Marg remained affected for some time as vehicles were diverted through alternate routes while civic agencies removed the tree.
The incident came on a day when heavy rain lashed the national capital, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic snarls and disruption across several parts of the city.
