Chennai, Aug 7 (PTI) The Tamil Nadu government on Friday amended the state Value Added Tax Act 2006 and every dealer shall be liable to pay a cess namely ‘Environment and Social Welfare’ on the sale of alcoholic liquor.
Moving the bill in the Assembly, Minister for Commercial Taxes and Registration D Logesh Tamilselvan said the government is increasingly concerned about the adverse social and environmental impacts caused by consumption of alcoholic liquor and the glass and plastic waste arising therefrom.
“It has also been observed that improper disposal and inadequate recycling of containers of alcoholic liquor contributes significantly to ecological degradation, endangering wildlife and public health concern,” he added.
He stated that the proceeds of the cess will be utlised for facilitation of proper recycling, safe disposal, reuse of containers of alcoholic, welfare measures and livelihood support for families of the persons affected by alcohol addiction and awareness and education campaigns highlighting the ill-effects of alcohol consumption and restoration of ecology, forest and wildlife.
The bill further added that every dealer will be paying not exceeding Rs 20 per unit container containing alcoholic liquor. PTI SNR SNR KH
