Gondia, Jul 18 (PTI) The Maharashtra Anti Corruption Bureau on Saturday booked the chief of Tirora municipal council in Gondia district and one more person for allegedly demanding a bribe to clear a catering bill, an official said.ACB Deputy Superintendent of Police Nilesh Lodhi identified the accused as Tirora municipal council chief Ashok Asati (54) and one Kailash Waghmare (50).
“The complainant was supposed to get Rs 25.22 lakh for catering services rendered during the municipal council polls in December last year. He met Asati in May this year to get the outstanding amount cleared. Asati told him just Rs 16 lakh would be cleared and sought a bribe of Rs 3.20 lakh. Asati wrote this amount on his palm and showed the complainant,” he said.
After the caterer approached ACB, a probe was initiated, which showed Asati had sought a bribe and it was to be given to his personal assistant, the official said.
“A trap was laid on June 9 but Asati and his PA did not accept any money. However, on Saturday, a case was registered against Asati and his associate Waghmare at Tirora police station by the ACB under provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act. They have been served notices under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for appearance in connection with the probe,” he said. PTI COR BNM
