Bhubaneswar, May 1 (PTI) Widespread thunderstorm and rain brought relief from sweltering heat in several parts of Odisha on Friday, except for Malkangiri, which recorded a maximum temperature of 40.2 degrees Celsius.
The storm damaged crops and mud houses, and uprooted trees in many places, but no loss of life has been reported yet.
Rain and thunderstorms hit several places, including Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Ganjam, Koraput, Rayagada, Puri, Angul, Phulbani, Darinhibadi, Sundargarh, Balasore, and Paradip, on Thursday and continued till the next day.
Paralakhemundi town in Gajapati district received 18.2 mm of rain on Friday, followed by Koraput 17.2 mm, Nabarangpur 10.2 mm, and Rayagada 2.6 mm.
The day temperatures remained below 40 degrees Celsius in most places, according to the weather department.
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said there is a standing instruction for collectors to report such damage caused by inclement weather.
“After receiving the damage assessment report from the collectors, we will release the compensation,” he said.
The weather office has predicted the inclement weather to persist till May 8, and advised people to take precautionary measures. PTI BBM BBM NSD
