Mumbai, Jun 23 (PTI) A jeweller was robbed of gold and cash, collectively valued at Rs 13.3 lakh, by three individuals who posed as police officers in Jogeshwari area of Mumbai, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred on the night of June 20 after the victim, identified as Khokan Nitai Mandal, was heading home after closing his shop.
He was stopped by three men claiming to be officers from the crime branch. They made Mandal sit in a car parked nearby under the pretext of interrogation, an official said.
Once inside the vehicle, they brandished a pistol and threatened to kill the jeweller before snatching his bag containing Rs 12.5 lakh in cash and gold pieces weighing 10 grams, collectively valued at Rs 13.3 lakh, and fled.
Following the incident, the victim immediately reached the Meghwadi police station and lodged a complaint, leading to the registration of a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) for extortion and robbery.
Investigators have secured footage from various CCTV cameras from the surrounding areas and are trying to identify the vehicle used in the crime. to track the movement of the suspects’ vehicle.
Senior officers have directed the local police and the crime branch to conduct a parallel investigation.
