Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 5 (PTI) A special round-the-clock squad has been constituted to prevent garbage dumping within a four-kilometre radius of the Thiruvananthapuram airport, the city corporation has informed the SHRC.
According to a statement issued by the commission, the move was made in compliance with directions issued by State Human Rights Commission Chairperson Justice Alexander Thomas.
The commission had issued the directions following a complaint based on newspaper reports about engine damage caused after a hawk struck an Oman Air aircraft near Thiruvananthapuram airport on April 15 last year, the statement said.
Taking note of the corporation’s submission, Justice Thomas directed it to ensure that inorganic waste is not dumped near the airport to prevent such incidents in future.
The corporation informed the commission that the Haritha Karma Sena had been deployed to collect and recycle inorganic waste from households in the area.
Haritha Karma Sena is a sanitation and waste management initiative of Kerala’s local self-government bodies.
It also said kitchen bin systems had been installed in households, while five aerobic bins had been set up at Sulaiman Street, Vallakadavu and the NS Depot to process organic waste.
