New Delhi, Aug 10 (PTI) Teamwork Arts on Monday announced the revival of “Going Solo”, an international festival dedicated to solo theatre, with plans to bring acclaimed productions from around the world to India in 2027.
Presented by Reena Wadhwa, the festival is returning after a long hiatus and will focus on solo performances that showcase the artistic possibilities of a single actor commanding the stage.
According to the organisers, “Going Solo” celebrates the long-standing tradition of the solo theatrical act, in which a single performer can take on multiple roles, narrate a story and drive the dramatic action.
“Solo theatre reminds us that the power of performance lies not in scale, but in the ability of a single voice to illuminate the shared human experience. Going Solo celebrates this extraordinary form of storytelling and creates meaningful encounters between artists and audiences across cultures,” Sanjoy K Roy, Managing Director of Teamworks Arts, said in a statement.
As the first step towards the 2027 edition, Roy informed, an international jury will attend the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in August this year to identify some of the most compelling solo theatre productions.
Up to three productions are expected to be selected for a tour of India, with performances proposed in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru.
The jury comprises Wadhwa, Nelson Fernandez and Laura Mackenzie Stuart, along with Jo Laidlaw. The panel will assess productions at the Edinburgh Fringe on parameters including originality, artistic excellence and the impact of solo performance.
“Solo theatre strips away everything except the relationship between the performer and the audience, making every performance deeply personal and unforgettable. Returning to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe to discover exceptional works for Indian audiences is both a privilege and an exciting responsibility.
“I look forward to bringing productions that surprise, move and spark conversations long after the curtain falls,” said Wadhwa.
First produced by Teamwork Arts in 2013, “Going Solo” was India’s pioneering international festival devoted exclusively to solo theatre.
