Amaravati, May 27 (PTI) TDP working president and Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh on Wednesday proposed that the party should allocate 33 percent seats to women in the 2029 elections, irrespective of the quota proposal getting the Parliament nod.

Addressing ‘Mahanadu’, TDP’s annual conclave, Lokesh said the party believes in ‘Stree Shakti’ (women’s power) and underscored that “we need more women lawmakers.” “Therefore, I propose that we lead from the front. Today, from this sacred Mahanadu stage, I propose that in the 2029 elections Telugu Desam Party should allocate 33 percent seats to women, not as a slogan but as a commitment to the future of India,” he said.

Though the party gave complete support to women’s reservation in legislative bodies, Lokesh accused Congress and other alliance parties in the opposition of making sure that the bill did not move forward.

“I strongly believe that the next year of Indian politics belongs to women’s leadership,” he said, adding that India took a historic step by bringing the women’s reservation bill.

“Our vision is clear, women must not remain beneficiaries alone but must become decision makers,” he added.

“Many parties talk about women empowerment during the elections and forget about them after elections but TDP since our inception has always believed in the power of women,” Lokesh added.

Besides the 2029 Lok Sabha polls, the Andhra Pradesh state Assembly elections are also scheduled that year. PTI STH SA
