Mumbai, Jul 17 (PTI) A 61-year-old income tax consultant from the city lost Rs 3.54 lakh in a fake Mahanagar Gas bill scam, Bhoiwada Police here said on Friday.
The complainant received a WhatsApp message in April claiming to be from Mahanagar Gas and warning that his gas connection would be disconnected by night if the pending bill was not cleared.
Soon afterwards, the complainant received a phone call from an unknown person who instructed him to download a mobile application and enter his customer number. The caller also asked him to make a payment of Rs 10 through the app.
Although the complainant downloaded the application, he did not make any payment. A few days later, he received email alerts informing him of unauthorised transactions from his bank accounts. After checking his bank statements, he realised that his mobile phone had been compromised.
Police said the fraudsters siphoned off Rs 3,54,299 from the complainant’s various bank accounts.
He immediately lodged a complaint with the National Cyber Helpline (1930). Further probe is on, police said.
