New Delhi: Punjab Police suspect that a friendship turning bitter may have led to the murder of a second-year law student by her batchmate at a private law college in Tarn Taran, ThePrint has learnt. The incident took place Monday.

Footage of the incident captured on CCTV shows a classroom at the Mai Bhago Law College in Usma village. In it, accused Prince Raj is seen standing with a group of students including batchmate Sandeep Kaur. Prince then turns towards Sandeep, draws a pistol and fires. Next, he turns the gun on himself and pulls the trigger.

Sandeep died on the spot, while Prince is said to be in a critical condition at a local hospital.

“Prima facie, it looks like friendship, which might have turned bitter,” a senior Punjab Police officer said, requesting anonymity. He added that more details are awaited as the probe is still in the preliminary stage.

Police have registered a case under section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, 2023, along with sections of the Arms Act..

Tarn Taran Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Surendra Lamba said a DSP-rank officer was rushed to the spot. “Mobile phones as well as weapons used in the offence have been recovered,” he told ThePrint.

Meanwhile, Sandeep’s mother Harjinder Kaur said the college alerted her to the sequence of events. “I came rushing after receiving the call that she was injured, leaving work. I was not even shown her face, and now I know that she was shot dead by a Tarn Taran boy,” Harjinder Kaur told reporters.

The breadwinner for her seven daughters, she also raised questions: “The question is, how did a student carry a gun into a classroom? Does the college have any security system at all?”
