Kolkata, Oct 5 (PTI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday warned his predecessor Mamata Banerjee against “digging too deep” into the disclosure of her 2021 leg injury medical records, stating that more such documents could be made public if required.
The remarks came hours after Banerjee served a legal notice on SSKM Hospital and Bangur Institute of Neurosciences (BIN) seeking an explanation over how her medical records relating to the 2021 Nandigram incident were disclosed publicly without permission.
During the Assembly election campaign that year, Banerjee, then the chief minister and Trinamool Congress candidate from Nandigram, sustained leg injuries. She subsequently campaigned from a wheelchair with her leg in a cast. The nature of her injuries became a major political issue during the election.
Speaking to reporters at the state secretariat after Monday’s Cabinet meeting, Adhikari said Banerjee was “making a mistake” by raising the issue.
“I will ask the health department to send me the complaint she has made. Perhaps she does not know what she had done. She herself had filed FIRs against BJP leaders, and the CID was investigating the matter,” Adhikari said.
He also warned Banerjee’s lawyer against pursuing the matter further.
“I will tell her lawyer not to dig too deep into this issue. She had thought she would become chief minister for a fourth term. So, she had left all the documents in her drawer (at her chamber at the Chief Minister’s Office at Nabanna),” Adhikari said.
He did not, however, specify whether the medical records had been obtained from Banerjee’s office or residence.
Adhikari also said that X-ray and MRI reports relating to the former chief minister’s injury could be made public if necessary.
“Such a situation will arise that you (Banerjee) will not be able to step out of your house,” the chief minister said.
Adhikari has claimed that Banerjee did not suffer a fracture and recently displayed medical documents in support of his assertion.
Banerjee’s legal notice has questioned the disclosure of her medical information, including whether the records were made public with the hospital’s permission or pursuant to any court order.
The notice also raised questions over the authenticity or possible alteration of the documents and sought steps to ensure that Banerjee’s medical records are not disclosed further.
It also sought an explanation from the hospital authorities on how records relating to the treatment of a former chief minister came into the possession of the incumbent chief minister. PTI SCH NN
