New Delhi, Oct 5 (PTI) The RSS affiliate Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) on Monday welcomed West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s announcement that his government will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state within six months, saying the move will ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

VHP national spokesperson Vinod Bansal said the organisation appreciates Adhikari’s announcement and described West Bengal as the third state in the country after Uttarakhand and Gujarat to announce plans to implement the UCC.

“We appreciate the announcement of CM Shri Suvendu Adhikari to become the third state of the country, which will implement Uniform Civil Code after Uttarakhand and Gujarat,” Bansal said in a post on X.

He also welcomed Adhikari’s commitment to bring in laws against “love jihad” and “land jihad” within six months, saying the measures will pave the way for the safety and security of citizens and the state.

“We thank him for his commitment to pass a law in six months to end love jihad and land jihad too. It will pave the way for the safety and security of all citizens and the pious land of Bengal,” Bansal said.

He further claimed that a law against “land jihad” will help the government reclaim hundreds of acres of government land allegedly under illegal occupation.

“By banning land jihad, the government could get back its hundreds of acres of government land that belongs to the private sector from the illegal occupancy of extremists,” Bansal said.

Adhikari, addressing an event in Kolkata on Sunday to mark the birth centenary of former VHP president Ashok Singhal, had said the BJP government in West Bengal would implement the UCC and bring stringent laws against “love jihad”, “land jihad” and religious conversions.

He sought six months to deliver on these promises and said the state government would function in accordance with the Constitution but would not tolerate attacks on Indian culture, tradition and places of worship.

“This government will not allow any anti-national activity here,” he had said. PTI ADI KSI

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
