Ballia (UP), Jun 26 (PTI) A suspected cattle smuggler was arrested after an alleged encounter with police here, during which he sustained a bullet injury to his right leg, a police officer said on Friday.
Additional Superintendent of Police (South) Sanjay Verma said the encounter took place around 12.30 am on Friday when the Ballia Kotwali police were conducting vehicle checks on Shivrampur Ghat Road near the Greenfield Expressway.
Acting on a tip-off, the police signalled an SUV to stop. However, the driver allegedly turned the vehicle around and tried to flee towards Kinaram Ghat. The police chased the vehicle, following which the accused got out of the SUV and allegedly opened fire on the police team with an intention to kill them, Verma said.
The police retaliated in self-defence, in which the accused was injured in his right leg before being arrested, he said, adding that the injured man was admitted to the district hospital for treatment.
The arrested accused was identified as Madan Mohan (27), a resident of Ichha Chaube Ka Pura village under Narhi police station limits.
According to the officer, the accused has 18 criminal cases registered against him at different police stations in the district and was absconding in a cattle smuggling case registered at Phephna police station.
The police seized a country-made pistol and cartridges from his possession.
Verma said the accused is a history-sheeter at the Narhi police station and is allegedly involved in cattle smuggling. PTI COR CDN MNK MNK
