Guruharsahai, Aug 16 (PTI) SAD MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Sunday said her husband Sukhbir Singh Badal, who sustained injuries to his hand in a ‘kirpan’ (ceremonial dagger) attack in Nanded, would rebound even stronger than before.
She said “anti-national elements wanted to destroy the hard-won peace of Punjab”, but these divisive acts would never cow down the Shiromani Akali Dal.
The Bathinda MP and former Union minister was addressing a rally here as part of the second phase of the party’s ‘Punjab Bachao’ campaign.
She also displayed a post-surgery picture of the severely injured arm of SAD president Sukhbir Badal.
He sustained injuries to his right hand in the kirpan attack by a member of the Nihang order inside a gurdwara on the outskirts of Maharashtra’s Nanded town on Thursday. The attacker was later arrested.
Asserting that nothing could sway the party away from its path, Harsimrat said “our strength, our pillar, our everything is our Guru”.
“So now, I am challenging these divisive forces — the more you try to attack us and finish us, the stronger we will emerge!” she said.
She further said she has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to demand a National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the two murderous attacks on Sukhbir Badal.
Terming the August 13 incident in Nanded, as well as the December 2024 incident in Amritsar — a gunfire attack targeting him outside the Golden Temple complex — part of a deep-rooted conspiracy to eliminate Badal and weaken the SAD, she said, “This is why I have requested the Union home minister to order a NIA probe into both incidents. This is because the ISI agent who attacked the SAD president at Sri Darbar Sahib was facilitated by an SP and was even able to secure bail in this heinous crime within a space of three months”.
During her address, she appealed to the people of the state to resolve that Punjabis would rule over Punjab and that the treasury of the state would be used to fulfil their aspirations instead of filling the “coffers of outsiders”.
Targeting the AAP government in the state, she further asserted that government jobs should go to Punjabis only and not outsiders.
She also called for ensuring the rights of Punjab, including those over its waters and its capital city of Chandigarh, adding that their weakening should not be allowed.
Appealing to people further to beware of those who were using the cloak of religion to spread the politics of hatred and cause divisions in society, Harsimrat said, “We need to follow in the footsteps of late Parkash Singh Badal and make achieving peace and communal harmony the cornerstone of state policy. This policy led to speedy development and progress earlier and will again lead the state out of darkness.” She also urged people to support their own regional party while asserting that they had experienced betrayal at the hands of both the Congress as well as the AAP.
