Mumbai, Jul 23 (PTI) Students and activists staged a protest and demanded Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation at the Shivaji Park ground in central Mumbai on Thursday before being chased away by police, with some of the youths falling down.
A leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, which had organised a signature campaign at the Park demanding Pradhan’s resignation over the NEET paper leak issue, claimed that police acted in a high-handed manner without any provocation and rounded up several persons.
A large number of students, carrying tricolors and placards, turned up in response to the campaign, said MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande.
They held a peaceful protest, shouting slogans, and there was no reason for the police to take any action, he claimed.
Videos showed police chasing the protesters away. Some of the protesters tripped and fell in the melee.
The detained protesters were taken to the Shivaji Park Police Station and later released.
A student who participated in the signature campaign said he had come to press the demand for Pradhan’s resignation.
