Pune, Sep 28 (PTI) A 21-year-old student has been arrested for allegedly breaking into the Pune bungalow of Shiv Sena MLC Neelam Gorhe and committing theft, police said on Monday.
The incident took place in the early hours of September 26, police said.
The accused, a student and resident of Taharabad in Nashik district, was arrested at around 7.20 pm on September 26, hours after the theft, according to the FIR registered at the Shivajinagar police station.
The FIR was registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections related to theft and house trespass or house-breaking on a complaint filed by a security guard deployed at the bungalow.
According to the complaint, the man allegedly entered Gorhe’s house in the posh Model Colony in the wee hours of September 26 and stole a tea thermos.
The incident came to light after the security guard noticed the man on the terrace of the bungalow, ‘Silver Rocks’, in the colony in Shivajinagar, an upscale residential locality, police said.
Gorhe, who was not at home at the time of the incident, later said the security guard had gone to inspect a water tank after water supply to the house abruptly stopped.
The guard then spotted the man on the terrace, said the former Deputy Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council.
According to the Shiv Sena leader, CCTV footage showed the man reaching the bungalow’s terrace at around 3 am and remaining there until about 7 am.
Gorhe said the fact that the theft accused was a student would not by itself explain his presence inside a residential premises at that hour.
“The police have found documents indicating that he is a student, but why would anyone enter somebody’s house and stay there for so long is something that needs to be investigated,” she said.
Gorhe said she had spoken with the Pune police commissioner and expected a detailed probe into the circumstances leading to the incident.
“Whether the intention was theft or something else can be established only after a thorough police investigation,” the MLC insisted. PTI SPK RSY
