New Delhi, Jun 4 (PTI) A specialised Centre of Excellence for Vertigo and Balance Disorders aimed at improving diagnosis, rehabilitation and long-term recovery for such patients was launched in Lajpat Nagar here on Thursday.

The facility set up by Pacific OneHealth micro-hospital under the leadership of neurotologist Dr Anirban Biswas seeks to address a major gap in the diagnosis and treatment of vestibular and balance disorders in India.

According to experts, nearly 25 crore Indians may be living with vestibular and balance disorders, while less than 80 specialised clinics across the country are equipped to diagnose and manage these conditions.

The launch coincides with Vertigo Awareness Week to be observed from June 1-7, 2026, an initiative aimed at increasing awareness about dizziness, imbalance, unexplained falls and vestibular disorders.

India’s population aged 60 years and above is projected to rise from 138 million in 2021 to nearly 194 million by 2031.

Experts said dizziness and balance disorders are among the most common health complaints among older adults, yet remain significantly under-recognised, underdiagnosed and undertreated.

Dr Anirban Biswas, Principal Director, Institute of Neurotology and Centre of Excellence for Vertigo and Balance Disorders, Pacific OneHealth, said, “Vertigo is not a disease; it is a symptom that signals dysfunction within the body’s balance system. Unfortunately, thousands of patients continue to suffer for years because dizziness is often dismissed as stress, weakness, ageing or a neurological problem.” Balance disorders involve the inner ear, brain, vision, nerves, muscles and even psychological health.

Accurate diagnosis is the biggest missing link in India today, Dr Biswas said, adding that dedicated balance disorder centres equipped with specialised diagnostics and rehabilitation can significantly improve the quality of life for patients.

He said vertigo and balance disorders affect nearly 40 per cent of adults in India, with prevalence increasing sharply with age. The conditions affect nearly one in three people aged above 60 years and one in two above 80 years.

Dr Biswas added that dizziness significantly increases the risk of falls among older adults, while falls remain the leading cause of accidental deaths in people above 65 years.

Dr Swadeep Srivastava, Co-Founder and President, Pacific OneHealth, asserted, “Healthcare systems often focus on visible diseases, while conditions that quietly erode mobility, independence and confidence receive far less attention. Vertigo and balance disorders are among those overlooked challenges. Through this Centre of Excellence and Vertigo Awareness Week, we aim to not only provide specialised care but also to create a national conversation around a health issue that affects millions yet remains largely invisible. We believe awareness, timely diagnosis and access to specialised care can transform patient outcomes.” As part of the Vertigo Awareness Week, Pacific OneHealth is conducting public awareness initiatives, educational programmes, expert interactions and free screening activities to encourage early recognition and timely intervention for balance-related disorders.

Pacific OneHealth is an emerging chain of micro-hospitals committed to making high-quality, specialist-led healthcare accessible. PTI PLB RUK RUK
