Gurugram: Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi has written an emotional letter to the IAS wife of Haryana IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, condemning the “prejudiced and biased” attitudes within the bureaucracy that allegedly drove the officer to end his life.

Ever since the 52-year-old Haryana Dalit IPS officer died by suicide on 7 October citing humiliation, harassment, and discrimination over caste by some serving and retired officers, and the alleged attempt by the State DGP to frame him in a false case, the Opposition has been trying to turn the heat on the Nayab Saini government in Haryana to project the BJP as anti-Dalit.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other Congress leaders at the national level and in Haryana have also targeted the BJP government for failing to provide a Dalit officer justice.

The e-mail, sent to IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, the letter dated 10 October and  accessed by ThePrint, describes her husband’s death as “both shocking and deeply saddening”. The e-mail extends “heartfelt condolences” to Amneet, currently posted as Commissioner and Secretary in Future, Civil Aviation and Future Cooperation Departments.

“The news of the untimely and tragic demise of your husband, senior IPS officer Mr Y. Puran Kumar, is deeply saddening and profoundly distressing. In this hour of immense grief, I extend my heartfelt condolences to you and your entire family,” Sonia Gandhi wrote.

“Mr Y. Puran Kumar’s passing reminds us that even today, officers committed to integrity and social justice face unjust challenges from those in positions of power. His struggle for justice will be remembered, and I, along with millions of citizens, stand with you on this path of truth and justice. I pray that in this difficult time, God grants you strength, courage, and comfort,” the Congress leader concluded.

Sonia Gandhi posted a copy of the letter on her social media X handle Sonia Gandhi Commentary on Saturday.

Recipient of the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service, the 2001-batch IPS officer Y. Puran Kuma, allegedly shot himself in the basement of his Sector 11 residence in Chandigarh on 7 October.

He was posted as IG, Police Training College, in Sunaria, Rohtak.

In an 8-page suicide note recovered from his pocket and from his laptop, Kumar had cited a chronology of systemic humiliation, mental harassment, and caste discrimination inflicted by senior officers, some of them now retired.

The suicide note specifically mentioned Haryana DGP Shatrujeet Kapur, who, according to the note, was trying to frame Kumar in a false criminal case of corruption by using Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia to arrest his former gunman on the complaint of a liquor contractor who alleged that the gunman demanded Rs 2.5 lakh from him on Kumar’s behalf.

Chandigarh Police has registered an FIR on Amneet P. Kumar’s complaint, but her demand to remove the DGP and arrest both the DGP and Rohtak SP has not been met so far.

Congress MP from Rohtak Deepender Singh Hooda led some other members of the Haryana Congress to Amneet’s Chandigarh residence to pay respect to the IPS officer and to offer support to his widow.

“Paid tribute today at the residence of senior IPS officer ADGP Y. Puran Kumar in Chandigarh on his untimely demise and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. We stand with the aggrieved family in their fight for justice. The delegation included former State Congress President Ch. @INCUdaiBhan ji, MP @VarunMullana ji, MLA @NirmalSMohra ji, MLA Geeta Bhukkal ji, MLA @shakuntlakhatak ji, MLA Naresh Selwal ji, MLA Ramkaran Kala ji, MLA Devender Hans ji, MLA @poojamullana ji, AICC Secretary and former Congress candidate from Bawani Khera @Narwal_inc ji, former CPS Rajkumar Valmiki ji, former MLA Lahri Singh ji, and Haryana Pradesh Congress SC Department Chairman @ManojBagri_INC ji, among others,” Deepender Hooda posted on his social media X with pictures of their visit.

Earlier, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, Haryana CLP leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda, AICC general secretaries Kumari Selja and Randeep Surjewala, and former MP Brijendra Singh had posted messages on their X targeting the BJP government while Ambala MP Varun Chaudhry had met Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria seeking a fair probe into the case.
