Kottayam (Kerala), May 1 (PTI) Social and consumer rights activist Dijo Kappen died at a private hospital in Pala here on Friday, family sources said.
He was 68.
A native of Edamattom near Pala, Kappen had been undergoing treatment after suffering injuries in an accident last year.
His health deteriorated in recent days, and he died while under treatment, sources said.
Kappen had begun his public life in politics and was associated with the Kerala Students Congress, the student wing of the Kerala Congress.
He later quit active politics in 1998 and turned to social and consumer rights activism.
Over the years, he was involved in several public issues and filed multiple lawsuits in matters of public interest.
Kappen was also a familiar face in television debates, where he regularly expressed views on social issues.
Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan and Congress leader Uma Thomas were among those who condoled his death on social media.
