Kota, May 6 (PTI) One woman died while the condition of five others deteriorated due to complications following caesarean deliveries at a government medical college and hospital here, officials said on Wednesday.

Following complications such as low blood pressure, falling platelet counts, and urinary blockage, the five critically ill women were shifted to the nephrology ward, while the newborn babies were moved to the NMCH ward, Superintendent Dr Nilesh Jain said.

A five-member medical team, led by Dr Vikas Khandeliya, has also been constituted for their treatment and monitoring. Another five-member team, led by Dr Suresh Dulara, has been formed to probe the cause behind the deterioration in their condition, as hospital authorities admitted that “something went wrong”, he said.

At least 12-13 pregnant women underwent caesarean deliveries on Monday evening, and the condition of six of them deteriorated hours after surgery, Jain said.

One of the six women died during treatment on Tuesday, he said, adding that a death-audit committee has been formed to ascertain the cause.

Jain said that there must be a specific reason why only six out of the twelve women developed complications.

“Condition of all the five women is stable, but they won’t be out of danger until 72-96 hours have passed,” he said.

Local MLA Sandeep Sharma visited the hospital and took stock of the situation. He said that investigations are underway to ascertain why only six out of the twelve women developed complications post-delivery. PTI COR MDO APL APL
