Gangtok, Oct 5 (PTI) Dynamic Flickers Dance Academy (DFD) of Sikkim will represent India at the International Ethnic Folklore Festival in Vietnam from October 6 to 11, an official said.

The festival, being held under the theme “Let’s Dance for World Peace”, is an international cultural platform bringing together traditional and folk dance groups from different countries. The event is an initiative associated with UNESCO, the official said.

DFD will showcase traditional dance forms and the rich cultural heritage of Sikkim during its performances at the festival.

Expressing excitement over the opportunity, Dilu Tamang, co-founder of Dynamic Flickers Dance Academy, said the participation would provide the academy with a platform to take Sikkim’s culture to an international audience.

“We are excited to inform that this is an opportunity for us to showcase our culture through dance,” Tamang said.

“We are really grateful to Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang for conceptualising a competition like Golden Feet. We had won a cash prize of Rs 30 lakh, and we are using that winning amount to travel for this international festival,” she said.

Sikkim Chief Minister’s Press Secretary Yougan Tamang said the participation of DFD in the Vietnam festival was an example of the kind of opportunities envisaged through the Golden Feet competition and other such initiatives.

“This is exactly the kind of outcome Chief Minister Shri Prem Singh Tamang Golay envisioned through Golden Feet and the series of Golden competitions. The idea was never limited to a competition or a cash prize, but to create meaningful platforms where Sikkim’s talent could be identified, encouraged and given opportunities to grow beyond the state,” he said.

“It is heartening to see the Dynamic Flickers Dance Academy, after winning the Golden Feet competition, now paving its way to an international platform in Vietnam and carrying Sikkim’s rich cultural identity with it,” Tamang said.

“With similar platforms being created for singers, bands and fashion, we hope to see many more young talents from Sikkim find their place on national and international stages,” he added.

Dynamic Flickers Dance Academy has previously represented Sikkim at national-level competitions and won the National Tribal Dance Competition in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, in 2022.

The Vietnam festival is expected to provide DFD an opportunity to showcase Sikkim’s traditional dance forms and cultural identity on an international platform. PTI COR RG

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
