New Delhi: A 32-year-old member of Sikkim Police posted in Delhi allegedly shot dead three of his colleagues Monday.

Accused L. Naik Prabin Rai and the three victims — Pinto Namgyal Bhutia, Indra Lal Chhetri and Dhanhang Subba — were all deployed at the Haiderpur water plant for security as part of the India Reserve Battalion.

While Bhutia and Chhetri died at the spot, Subba was declared dead in hospital. Rai is learnt to have surrendered to police after the crime.

Sikkim Police said there was a fifth person at the scene who “escaped”.

According to Delhi Police sources, Rai said during his interrogation that the three victims had “mentally harassed” him.

“During questioning, the accused said they would harass him by passing remarks on his personal and professional life. He said that they would often joke and taunt him about his wife,” a senior police officer said. “All four of them posted at Haiderpur shared the same barracks as well.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Pranav Tayal said police had received a PCR call about firing at the Haiderpur water treatment plant Monday afternoon

“A PCR call was received at PS KNK Marg regarding firing in Haiderpur water treatment plant. It was found that three persons from Sikkim Police had been shot at, of which two died on the spot and one was critically wounded and transferred to BSA hospital who was declared brought dead,” Tayal added.

Rai, Tayal said, “informed us that today around 3 pm he shot his colleagues at Haiderpur Water Treatment Plant Barrack”. A case is being registered, he added.

Sikkim Police Deputy Inspector General (Range) and spokesperson Tashi Wangyal said the matter is being investigated by Delhi Police.

“The incident happened today around 2.50 pm around the water treatment plant of Haiderpur of the Rohini area of Delhi. Three Rohini reserve battalion personnel were shot dead,” he added. “The accused person is in custody of Delhi Police, out of these five, one has escaped.”

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang expressed condolence in a Facebook post

The incident comes just days after two incidents of alleged fratricide in Jammu & Kashmir. A member of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) reportedly shot and injured three colleagues before killing himself in Udhampur district Saturday. In Poonch, Friday, an Army jawan allegedly shot his colleague dead and later killed himself. Two other soldiers were also injured in the incident.
