Gangtok, Jun 28 (PTI) Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang on Sunday underscored the deep cultural and historical ties between Sikkim and Darjeeling in West Bengal while attending the Kirati Khambu Rai Cultural Festival 2026 and the sacred Sakela Ubhauli celebrations in Darjeeling.

The event was attended by Sikkim minister Bhojraj Rai, West Bengal minister Bishal Lama, Darjeeling MP Raju Bista and other dignitaries.

In a social media post, Sikkim Chief Minister congratulated the Kirati Khambu Rai Cultural and Research Society (KKRSS) for organising the festival, saying it plays a vital role in preserving the language, traditions and identity of the Kirati community.

“Sakela reminds us to live in harmony with nature, honour our ancestors, and strengthen the values of unity, gratitude and mutual respect. Preserving our language and cultural heritage is our shared responsibility and our greatest gift to future generations,” Tamang said.

Highlighting the close relationship between the two neighbouring Himalayan regions, the CM said, “Sikkim and Darjeeling may be separated by administrative boundaries, but we remain united by our shared language, culture, traditions and history. Let us continue to strengthen this enduring bond.” Tamang also urged the younger generation to embrace their cultural roots while preparing for the future.

“May our culture, language and traditions continue to flourish,” he said.

The Sakela Ubhauli festival, one of the most significant cultural celebrations of the Kirati Rai community, symbolises gratitude to nature and prayers for prosperity, while showcasing the community’s rich cultural heritage through traditional rituals, music and dance. PTI COR NN
