Thane, Jul 26 (PTI) Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Sunday laid the foundation stone for several development projects in Thane, prime being the one at Teen Hath Naka, among the busiest traffic junctions in the city, officials said.
Addressing MMRDA and TMC officials, Shinde emphasized an “accelerator-on-the-pedal” approach to infrastructure, stating that developmental projects must move forward without waiting for formal inauguration delays.
The traffic decongestion and improvement project at Teen Hath Naka, designed with inputs from European urban infrastructure consultants, maps out complex underground utilities, including water, gas, and fuel pipelines, to reroute traffic seamlessly, officials said.
“Teen Hath Naka is one of the most heavily choked junctions in the region through which traffic converges from seven different directions. Once complete, signal wait times at Teen Hath Naka, often dubbed as being among Asia’s longest, will drop to 15 seconds, giving relief to commuters heading to Mumbai, Nashik, Naupada, Wagle Estate, Kopri, and the proposed new Thane railway station,” an official said.
Shinde highlighted the Thane Coastal Road and Eastern Freeway Extension project, adding that an elevated corridor will connect the Eastern Freeway extension from Kheda Nagar directly through Anand Nagar, Saket, Gaimukh, and Fountain Hotel.
This ring and bypass route aims to divert heavy commercial and inter-city traffic originating from Ahmedabad, JNPT, and Mumbai away from internal city streets, significantly reducing inner-city congestion and vehicular pollution, he said.
Work is also progressing rapidly on the Thane-Borivali twin tunnel project running under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, which is set to slash travel time between Thane and Borivali from 1.5 to 2 hours down to just 20 minutes once operational.
Officials also said foundation work for Pod Taxi networks has begun in Thane, which will link residential complexes directly to major transport hubs, hospitals, and commercial centres.
“The construction of Thane’s largest state-of-the-art 900-bed super-specialty civic hospital structure has been completed. The facility is equipped to support air-ambulance operations with an integrated helipad for critical medical transport,” Shinde added. PTI COR BNM
