Kolkata, Sep 13 (PTI) Sharp showers and gusty winds on Sunday afternoon hampered pre-Durga Puja shopping in Kolkata and adjoining districts as the IMD forecast widespread rain in south Bengal from September 16 to 19.
Shoppers in major city markets, from Gariahat to New Market in south Kolkata and Maniktala in the north, were inconvenienced by the rain.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), widespread rain is likely over the districts of south Bengal from September 16 to 19.
An active southwest monsoon is also likely to bring fairly widespread rain over the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar and Cooch Behar till September 19 from Sunday, the IMD said.
Significant rainfall was recorded in the north Bengal districts of Cooch Behar (58 mm), Jalpaiguri (42 mm) and Alipurduar (28 mm) in 24 hours till 8.30 am on Sunday.
