New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) on Wednesday accused Delhi Police of “witch-hunting” its national joint secretary Aishe Ghosh after an alleged attempt was made to arrest her in connection with an “old non-bailable warrant”.
Police, however, maintained that the action was not related to the recent youth protests over alleged paper leaks.
Addressing a press conference at the HKS Surjeet Bhawan here, SFI’s national leadership alleged the police action was part of a broader crackdown on student leaders who participated in the recent protests that culminated in the resignation of former Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
According to the SFI, Delhi Police personnel reached the AKG Centre on Tuesday in an attempt to arrest Ghosh.
It termed the move “political vendetta” and alleged that student activists across the country were facing arrests, false cases and intimidation for participating in peaceful protests.
“We will not bow before the witch-hunting of Delhi Police,” SFI said in a statement, alleging that the government was targeting voices of dissent and attacking democratic rights.
The organisation claimed that several people associated with the youth protests were facing repression in different parts of the country, including Patna, Kolkata, Guwahati and Kerala.
Rejecting the allegations, a senior Delhi Police officer said the visit by an investigating officer was not related to the recent protests.
“An Investigating Officer (IO) had visited the location in connection with an old non-bailable warrant case pursuant to court orders. His visit was unrelated to the present matter,” the officer said.
The SFI, however, said the Patiala House Courts had cancelled the non-bailable warrant issued against Ghosh, and she would appear before the court on Thursday. PTI AHD ARB
