Bhopal, May 6 (PTI) Police have arrested an elderly man for allegedly raping a five-year-girl, who is a friend of his granddaughter, in Madhya Pradesh capital Bhopal, officials said on Wednesday.

The incident took place on May 3 at the residence of the 75-year-old accused, who is a lawyer, when the victim came to play with his granddaughter, Habibganj police station in-charge Sanjeev Choukse told reporters.

The accused lives with his daughter and granddaughter, while the victim lives next door.

“The girl went to the house of the accused to play with his granddaughter. Taking advantage of the situation, the man took the victim to a room and sexually assaulted her,” the official added.

After returning home that night, the girl complained of pain to her mother, who found several bruises on her, and immediately took her to a doctor, he said.

The doctor examined the minor and expressed suspicion that she could have been sexually assaulted. The victim’s mother then approached the local police station.

“During her counseling, the girl disclosed that her friend’s maternal grandfather had molested her. After that, the police registered a case of rape and arrested the elderly accused. He was also booked under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act,” the police official said.

During his interrogation, the accused initially tried to mislead the police. However, he later confessed to molesting the girl, he added.

A local court on Tuesday remanded the accused in judicial custody. PTI COR MAS NP
