Kozhikode (Keralam), Oct 11 (PTI) A second fishing boat worker died after suspected inhalation of poisonous gas in a chamber of a vessel at Beypore here, police said on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Sachin Das of West Bengal.

At around 10.30 am on Friday, Das and Dileep Sur, also from West Bengal, collapsed while working in the cold storage chamber of a fishing boat named Tesla at Beypore harbour.

Sur died at a hospital around 4.30 pm the same day, while Das, who was undergoing treatment, died in the wee hours of Sunday, police said.

Doctors who conducted the postmortem examination on Sur’s body suspect that the two workers might have inhaled gas released by chemicals used to preserve fish in the cold storage chamber, police said.

Officials said the boat was carrying fish intended for fertiliser production.

The police surgeon has also cited low oxygen levels in the chamber as a possible cause of the deaths, officials said.

“We have sent samples for chemical analysis to confirm whether the deaths occurred due to inhalation of poisonous gas,” a police officer said.

Police said the boat owner would be named as an accused based on the evidence that emerges during the investigation.

Currently, a case for unnatural death is registered as part of the investigation, officials said. PTI TBA TBA ADB

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
