Gorakhpur (UP), Aug 31 (PTI) A 15-year-old girl climbed a water tank in Mahadev Jharkhandi Colony on Sunday afternoon after allegedly being upset over a scolding from her mother for talking to a boy on the phone, triggering panic among residents and a three-hour police rescue operation, a police official said on Monday.
According to police, the teenager, a resident of Awas Vikas Shivpur, climbed the tank around 1.30 pm and sat atop it, drawing the attention of passersby. Fearing she might take an extreme step, residents alerted the AIIMS police station.
Despite repeated requests from residents and police, she refused to come down. A crowd gathered at the spot as officers continued efforts to persuade her.
As a precautionary measure, mattresses were placed beneath the tank to prevent injury in case of a fall.
After nearly three hours of counselling and negotiations, Sub-Inspector Jagruti Kharwar climbed the tank, pretending to continue the conversation, and gained the girl’s confidence.
Police said Kharwar assured the teenager that her concerns would be heard and that the family would receive counselling. Once she moved close enough, the sub-inspector held the girl’s hand and with assistance from colleagues below safely brought her down.
Superintendent of Police (city) Nimish Patil said the girl later told police that her mother had scolded her for talking to a boy on the phone. Upset by the scolding, she climbed the water tank in anger.
