Palghar, Jul 29 (PTI) A 32-year-old building material supplier, who is the husband of a sarpanch in Thane district, has been arrested for alleged celebratory firing during a late-night Kalamb beach resort bash in Palghar, an official said on Wednesday.

The accused, identified as Sandesh Gurav (32), allegedly fired a shot in the air at 1:30 am.

A police beat marshal patrolling the area heard the gunfire and immediately reached the resort to enquire about the noise. However, the resort management and the inmates initially expressed ignorance about any such incident, a police official said.

Later, a senior police officer visited the premises for a thorough inspection and recovered a fired bullet cartridge from the resort compound.

Upon rigorous questioning, police learned that Gurav had allegedly fired a shot in the air out of excitement during a party held at the resort.

Arnala Sagari Police registered an FIR on Wednesday under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act, and took Gurav into custody.

“We have arrested the accused and recovered the empty shell from the scene. He is the husband of a sarpanch from a village in Bhiwandi (Thane district). We are currently verifying whether he has a criminal background and checking whether the firearm used in the incident was licensed,” a police officer added. PTI COR NSK
