New Delhi, Jun 2 (PTI) AAP councillors staged a protest outside the MCD commissioner’s office on Tuesday, demanding action in a Saket building-collapse incident, in which six people were killed, according to a statement.
Carrying placards and “fake currency” notes, the AAP councillors raised slogans, protesting against alleged inaction in the building-collapse case.
Leader of Opposition in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Ankush Narang said AAP councillors staged a protest at Municipal Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar’s office at the civic body’s headquarters located in the Civic Centre, alleging corruption, officials’ complicity and negligence of the BJP-ruled MCD in the collapse of the building under construction in Saket.
“The entire network of illegal constructions in Delhi is operating under the patronage of the BJP. Despite complaints from local residents, the deputy commissioner took no action. In this regard, a demand has been made to the municipal commissioner to immediately suspend the deputy commissioner of the south zone,” Narang said in a post in Hindi on X.
“The corrupt system of the BJP-ruled MCD has claimed the lives of innocent people. The Aam Aadmi Party’s struggle will continue until strict action is taken against the guilty officials and responsible individuals, and justice is served to the affected families,” he added.
AAP councillor from Tilak Nagar Ashok Kumar Maanu, who was at the protest, said those who lost their lives in the building collapse should get justice and officials should resign.
“The property was already flagged as dangerous and a notice was given by a court. No action was taken and the building collapsed. We are protesting outside the commissioner’s office, demanding the deputy commissioner’s resignation,” Maanu said to PTI Videos.
A few councillors were dressed as a “cockroach” and hurled “fake” currency notes alleging that corruption has taken over the corporation.
“Take these notes but save the lives of innocent people,” Maanu said on the question of bringing duplicate currency in the protest. PTI VBH RC
