Bengaluru: Hours after the Telangana Police shot dead four accused in the rape and murder case of a young veterinarian in an encounter in Hyderabad, jubilant scenes were seen across the city.

Raising slogans in praise of Telangana Police and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao, Hyderabad residents took to the streets even as congratulatory comments poured in from politicians and celebrities on social media and television news channels.

Visuals from the city’s streets seemed straight out of the movies as local residents showered rose petals on the encounter spot and lifted police officers on their shoulders. Slogans filling the air ranged from ‘Jagrindi, Jagrindi, Nayayam Jagrindi’ (Justice has been delivered) to ‘CM Zindabad, Police Zindabad‘ and ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’.

The parents and sister of the 25-year-old victim welcomed the police action and said justice had finally been served.

“It has been 10 days since my daughter died and this is perfect justice for what they did to her. I express my sincere gratitude to the Telangana police and government for this. My daughter’s soul will finally find peace now,” the woman’s father told local media channels.

Her younger sister, however, said she had hoped that the accused would have been awarded capital punishment through the courts.

“I did not expect them to be killed in an encounter, which also is justice of a different kind. With this incident, people should be scared to indulge in such crimes against women,” she told reporters outside her home.

The residents of the colony where the victim lived burst crackers and distributed sweets to the police.

“Even though she is no more with us, we are happy that justice was served in 10 days,” Shyamala, one of the residents, told ThePrint over phone.

Asha Devi, mother of the 2012 Delhi gang-rape victim Nirbhaya, also said the police did a “great job”. “I wish that no action be taken against the police personnel involved in the encounter,” she told ANI.

Speaking to ThePrint, Bengaluru police commissioner Bhaskar Rao said protecting society is the duty of every police officer and the Hyderabad police has done the right thing.

“CrPC (Code of Criminal Procedure) empowers an officer to defend and decide when action should be taken, and it has been done accordingly,” he added.

Several celebrities like Saina Nehwal, Rishi Kapoor, Nagarjuna, Rakul Preet Singh, Jr NTR and Lakshmi Manchu too joined in to praise the police for their work and ensuring that “justice” was delivered.

The encounter

Early Friday, the four accused in the Hyderabad rape and murder case — lorry workers Areef, Shiva, Naveen and Chennakeshavulu — were taken to the spot of the crime, Chatanpally, to recreate the crime scene, said a statement from the police.

During the crime recreation, one of the accused allegedly snatched a police weapon and attacked the officers and so they fired back in self-defence, killing them on the spot, a senior Hyderabad police officer told ThePrint on the condition of anonymity.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has sought a report from the Telangana government on the encounter as it is a case of killing while the accused were in custody. The Hyderabad police commissioner and the chief minister’s office have apprised the Centre of the development in the case, said a source in the state government.

With questions being raised over the criminal justice delivery system, ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti’s spokesperson M. Krishank told ThePrint that the government works constitutionally, within its legal guidelines.

“Democracy means, for the people, by the people and of the people and today’s development is an example of how chief minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao respects both, people and democracy,” said Krishank.

  1. Instead of all these if police would have immediately attended the case in first place without treating them badly she would have been saved

  2. One constructive takeaway from public emotions that are on display is that capital punishment – after a fair trial – should be the norm in cases where a woman / girl is violated and then killed.
