Ghaziabad (UP), Aug 10 (PTI) A worker was killed and two others were injured after the roof of a hardware shop collapsed in the Loni Border area of Ghaziabad on Monday evening, police said.
The incident occurred around 4-5 pm at Paras Steel in the iron market at Gulab Vatika, where three workers were engaged in labour work in the rear portion of the shop when the roof suddenly collapsed, burying them under debris and material stored above, police said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ankur Vihar) Amardeep Kumar Maurya said the shop is owned by Abhishek Jain, a resident of Delhi’s Jyoti Nagar, and his family member Kunal Jain was sitting at the counter when the incident occurred.
According to the police, Jatin and Arjun were rescued shortly after the incident and suffered minor injuries. The third worker, Mukesh, a resident of Barabanki, was trapped deep under the debris.
A joint rescue operation involving the police, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), fire department and municipal teams continued for around three hours before Mukesh was pulled out and taken to hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said Mukesh’s death appeared to have been caused by suffocation, prima facie.
Maurya said the shop was located on the first floor, while material belonging to shops on two to three floors above had been stored on the structure. There were allegedly inadequate pillars and no strong concrete slab, with the roof made of beams and slabs. Some construction work was also underway on the third floor when the collapse occurred, he said.
The police and rescue teams cordoned off the area and continued clearing the debris with machinery. An investigation is underway into the cause of the collapse and the condition of the building, officials said.
The Chief Minister’s Office in Lucknow said Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had taken cognisance of the incident and directed officials to expedite relief and rescue operations and provide all possible assistance to affected families. PTI KIS MAN MDO MDO
