Thane, Aug 1 (PTI) Plaster from a slab came off and structural cracks appeared in the columns of a building in Thane’s Mumbra area on Saturday, prompting authorities to evacuate 170 residents, the move coming a day after a building collapse in Bhiwandi claimed 10 lives.
No injuries were reported in the incident that occurred at 3:50 pm at ‘Dhoom Apartment’, a ground-plus-five-storey structure located near Sania Hall in Chandnagar, said Yasin Tadvi, chief of Regional Disaster Management Cell (RDMC) of Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC).
The 20-year-old building had already been classified under ‘C1′ category’, which means it is extremely dangerous and fit for immediate evacuation and demolition, he added.
“Plaster from a slab fell and major structural cracks were observed on the building’s columns, leaving the remaining structure in a highly precarious condition. Out of the 42 flats in the building, 22 flats were currently occupied, housing approximately 160 to 170 residents,” Tadvi said.
Assistant commissioner Vijay Kawale, along with officials from the encroachment department, disaster management staff from the Mumbra Ward Committee rushed to the site and issued immediate notices directing all remaining occupants to vacate the premises at the earliest.
Further legal and demolition proceedings are being handled by the Mumbra Ward Committee and the TMC Construction Department, officials added. PTI COR BNM
