New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) Renowned shooting coach Jaspal Rana, who was admitted in a critical condition after suffering a heart attack that doctors said had occurred three days earlier while he was travelling, had recovered significantly and was fit for discharge before suffering a fatal cardiac rupture, a hospital said on Friday.
According to Dr Balbir Singh, Group Chairman – Cardiac Sciences, Pan Max & Chief of Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, Rana was brought to the hospital in a critical condition.
“Mr. Jaspal Rana presented with an acute heart attack that was already three days old. He had been travelling and continued to experience chest pain before arriving at the hospital in a very critical condition,” Singh said.
“The artery responsible for the heart attack was completely blocked. His heart’s pumping function was severely weakened, and he was in heart failure,” he said.
The hospital said Rana responded well to treatment and had shown significant recovery.
“Mr. Rana had recovered significantly and was fit for discharge today. However, he unfortunately suffered a sudden cardiac rupture while asleep, which led to his demise,” Singh said.
Singh said patients who present late after a heart attack are at risk of serious complications, including cardiac rupture, which can lead to sudden death.
Rana, one of India’s finest pistol shooters who later became a highly successful coach, guided Indian shooter Manu Bhaker to a historic twin bronze-medal haul at the Paris Olympics.
His death has left the shooting fraternity in shock.
Rana had initially fallen ill aboard the Indian contingent’s return flight from the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany. After landing in New Delhi, he was immediately hospitalised, where doctors inderted a stent to clear a blocked artery. PTI SGV SGV MDO MDO
