Jaipur, Aug 12 (PTI) Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Wednesday said the struggle of “fighters for democracy” during the period of Emergency was historic, and their sacrifices and commitment should inspire the younger generations.
Addressing a felicitation ceremony for persons jailed during the Emergency between June 1975 and March 1977 at his residence here, Sharma said those who witnessed and endured the Emergency have the experience and capacity to guide society and the nation.
He said several generations made sacrifices for India’s independence, while during the Emergency, fighters for democracy faced difficult circumstances in national interest and to protect democratic values.
The youth should understand that the democracy they have inherited was made possible by the sacrifices of these people, the chief minister said.
Sharma urged every person who resisted the Emergency to document their experiences in writing and said the state government would work to preserve their contributions.
He also called upon them to engage with people from all sections of society on issues of national interest and help create a positive social environment where good governance, development and social sensitivity are priorities.
Such dialogue would strengthen the spirit of placing national interest above personal interests, particularly during difficult times, he said.
“The fighters for democracy witnessed and endured the Emergency, and therefore have the ability to provide direction to society. The state should benefit from their experiences,” Sharma said.
