Raipur, Aug 6 (PTI) In separate incidents, two women were allegedly murdered in the city by their boyfriends after suspecting their fidelity, police said on Thursday.

While the incidents took place on August 3 and August 4, both the accused were arrested on Wednesday.

The victims were identified as Bharti Netam (22) and Nandini Jal (19).

Bharti, a native of Kokpur village in Kanker district, was found dead after her live-in partner, Sawant Baghel, brought her to a government hospital in the early hours of Wednesday.

A BEd student at a city college, Bharti had been living with Baghel in a rented house in Boriyakala Housing Board Colony for the last six to seven months, a police official said.

According to the complaint lodged by her elder sister, Bharti had told her on many occasions that Baghel suspected her of having a relationship with another man and even assaulted her.

On the night of August 4, Bharti called her sister and said she wanted to return to her village as Baghel had assaulted her again. Her sister transferred Rs 3,000 to her account for travel expenses, the official said.

At around 2 am on Wednesday, Baghel took Bharti to a hospital where doctors declared her dead. He then informed her family and friends before fleeing from the hospital.

He was later apprehended by police. During interrogation, Baghel allegedly confessed to have assaulted and strangled Bharti in a fit of rage after suspecting her of speaking to another man over phone, said Mujgahan police Station House Officer Amit Kaushik.

He was booked for murder and further probe is underway, said the official.

In the second incident, Karan Tandi (23) was arrested for allegedly murdering his girlfriend Nandini Jal, resident of Siya Residency near MMI Hospital, and dumping her body in a waterlogged field behind Solapuri Mata Temple under Khamtarai police station limits.

The body was found on August 4. The post-mortem examination and investigation revealed that Tandi had allegedly gagged and strangled the victim with her scarf and then held her head down in the water-filled field to ensure her death, a police official said.

During the investigation, Nandini’s parents expressed suspicion about Tandi. He tried to mislead the police initially but later admitted to the murder, the official said.

Tandi and the victim had been in a relationship for about four years after meeting through Instagram and had lived together for six months before separating. He allegedly suspected her of being involved with other men, leading to frequent disputes, the official said.

On August 3, the two met near Solapuri Mata Temple. During an argument, Tandi allegedly killed Nandini. Further investigation is on, the official said. PTI TKP KRK
