Chandigarh, Sep 28 (PTI) Taking suo motu cognisance of two protest incidents at LPU and Chitkara University, the Punjab State Women Commission on Monday sought a detailed report, including copies of the FIRs and safety measures for students on the campuses, from the respective district and police administrations.
The two universities — Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Karpurthala’s Phagwara and Chitkara University in Patiala — have witnessed students’ protests over the past two days.
Students at Chitkara University launched an agitation over unverified claims that two female students allegedly committed suicide on the campus, while the LPU students allegedly went on a rampage and blocked a national highway over the allegation that an outsider had raped a female student on the university premises.
Punjab Women’s Commission Chairperson Raj Lali Gill said she has taken suo motu cognisance of the incidents reported at LPU and Chitkara University.
“We have sought a detailed clarification on the entire matter, copies of the FIRs and comprehensive reports on the safety and security measures in place for students on both campuses. Students’ safety is the prime concern. Accountability and transparency is imperative,” she said in a post on X.
In a communication to the Kapurthala DCP and the SSP, the Commission cited media reports on students’ protest at LPU.
Police have already registered an FIR based on the complaint by students, and an SIT has been formed.
The women’s panel asked for an inquiry by a senior officer in the matter and a report in this regard by September 30.
The commission also sought a copy of the FIR, information about the composition of the SIT formed to investigate the case and the status of the investigation conducted so far.
It further said information about security arrangements made for the safety of students at girls’ hostels, CCTV surveillance, security staff and entry/exit monitoring should also be shared with it.
The university administration should send a report on complaints received regarding the safety of female students and the action taken in this regard, it said.
It also said steps should be taken to ensure that the victim does not face any kind of pressure or threat during the investigation.
On the Chitkara University incident, the women’s panel asked police if they had received any complaint regarding the disappearance, injury or any other untoward incident involving a student from the university. If yes, then a copy of it and a detailed report of the action taken should be sent to the commission, it said.
A report should be sent on steps taken by the Chitkara University administration regarding the security concerns expressed by students, it said.
Information should also be provided about measures to ensure the safety of girl students and prevent such a situation from arising in the future, it added. PTI CHS
