New Delhi: The Punjab Police on Monday detained five people in connection with the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala who was shot dead in his car Sunday.

A joint operation was conducted with the Uttarakhand Police, Punjab said, adding the men were picked up from Dehradun’s Peliyon Police Chowki area.

Moosewala was shot dead in broad daylight Sunday in his village Mansa, a murder that was witnessed by his father, the police said in its first information report.

Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar has reportedly claimed responsibility for the killing. He is allegedly a close associate of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

The Delhi Police Monday said it would probe those linked with Lawrence Bishnoi and Brar. The police said Brar was already under the radar for several attempted murders.

Authorities also said that Brar planned murders in the country with the help of Lawrence. Lawrence has been in the Bharatpur Jail in Rajasthan since 2017 for various crimes.

The Delhi Police suspects the murder of Moosewala could be in retaliation to the killing of Lawrence’s friend Vikky Middukhera in August last year.

Moosewala contested the 2022 Punjab elections from Mansa on a Congress ticket, but lost to the ruling Aam Aadmi Party’s Vijay Singla.

The singer was shot dead a day after the Punjab Police withdrew his security along with that of 423 others.

Under pressure from the Opposition to act quickly, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has ordered an inquiry to be headed by a high court judge.

With inputs from agencies.
