Chandigarh, Oct 25 (PTI) Former Congress MLA Raminder Singh Awla on Sunday joined the Shiromani Akali Dal here, a move which comes ahead of the Punjab Assembly polls due early next year.

SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal welcomed Awla into the party fold.

“It is a pleasure to welcome senior Congress leader and former MLA from Jalalabad, Raminder Singh Awla, into the Shiromani Akali Dal fold,” Badal said in a post on X.

“Jalalabad gave me the opportunity to serve it thrice. It is also a constituency which witnessed revolutionary development during the Akali governments,” he said.

Badal said he was confident that Awla will put in his best to strengthen the SAD in the constituency as well as the entire border belt to ensure the party’s victory in 2027.

Awla contested from the Jalalabad assembly constituency in Fazilka district during the 2019 bypoll and became a legislator on a Congress ticket by defeating SAD candidate Raj Singh Dibbipura.

Sukhbir Badal has served as MLA from the Jalalabad constituency thrice. PTI CHS DV

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
