Hoshiarpur, Jul 23 (PTI) A wanted accused in a drugs case and his brother were arrested on Thursday for allegedly attempting to run over an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) and assaulting a police team during a raid here, police said.

The accused have been identified as Naresh Kumar alias Ladi and his brother Harish Kumar, both residents of Shankar Nagar.

Police have also booked Naresh’s father Ram Krishan, sister Harkirat Kaur and wife Kavita, who are yet to be arrested.

Station House Officer (SHO) Industrial Focal Point Purhiran police station Jagjit Singh said the incident took place on Wednesday when the police team launched a raid and went to arrest Naresh Kumar, a wanted accused in a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act case registered in May.

Jagjit Singh said the team spotted a car parked near a culvert close to Naresh’s residence, with him sitting in the front passenger seat and Harish driving the vehicle.

When ASI Sangat Singh signalled the occupants to roll down the window, Naresh allegedly asked Harish Kumar to flee. The driver then accelerated the car and allegedly tried to run over the ASI, who escaped by jumping aside, police said.

The accused allegedly drove through nearby streets before returning to their residence, where the police team followed them.

According to the FIR, Naresh, Harish and three others allegedly dragged ASI Sangat Singh inside the house, confined him and assaulted him. They later locked themselves inside a room, police said.

They further alleged that when the team entered the premises, the other accused assaulted ASI Ashok Kumar, tore his uniform and obstructed the police from performing their duty.

Naresh and Harish were later arrested, while the remaining three accused managed to escape, they said.

A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including attempt to murder and further investigation is underway. PTI COR CHS SMV SMV MDO MDO
