Chandigarh, Oct 11 (PTI) Punjab BJP Mahila Morcha workers on Sunday held a protest here against the Congress, accusing it of shielding Congress MP and JNU Professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam who is facing allegations of sexual harassment.
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Friday dismissed professor Akoijam, who is also a Congress MP fom Manipur, over sexual harassment complaints against him.
Led by Punjab BJP women wing president Jai Inder Kaur, hundreds of protesters attempted to march towards the Congress office but were stopped by Chandigarh police. They were later detained.
Speaking to the media earlier, Jai Inder Kaur stated that 11 female students of Jawaharlal Nehru University had accused the Congress MP of sexual harassment and mental harassment.
She claimed that the university’s internal inquiry had substantiated the allegations, following which JNU dismissed him from service on October 9.
Questioning the Congress leadership, Kaur said, “Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge frequently speak about women’s safety and dignity, but why are they completely silent when serious allegations emerge against their own Member of Parliament?
“Is protecting their political interests more important than ensuring justice for women?”
She also accused the Congress of shielding its MP and criticised the party’s record on women’s empowerment, contrasting it with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s initiatives.
The BJP Mahila Morcha demanded the immediate suspension of the MP from the Congress party, his resignation from the Lok Sabha, strict legal action and a public apology from the Congress leadership to the 11 complainants.
“Women’s dignity and safety must never be compromised for political convenience. Congress must break its silence and take immediate action,” Kaur asserted. PTI CHS RT
