Chandigarh: In a significant decision, the Punjab government Wednesday approved 33 per cent reservation for women under direct recruitment in Punjab Civil Services.

In a meeting, the state cabinet approved the Punjab Civil Services (Reservation of Posts for Women) Rules, 2020, to provide the reservation for women for direct recruitment to posts in government jobs as well as in boards and corporations in Group A, B, C and D posts, said an official statement.

Terming the cabinet decision as historic, Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Aruna Chaudhary expressed gratitude towards Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and the entire Council of Ministers, and said it will create more employment opportunities for the women in the state.

In a press statement, Chaudhary said her government is committed to fulfill its promises made in the election manifesto and more such decisions to empower women will be taken in due course of time.

She said earlier 50 per cent reservation was also accorded to women in elections to panchayati raj institutions (PRIs) and municipal bodies by enacting the Punjab Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Act and the Punjab Municipal (Amendment) Act.

The cabinet, meanwhile, also gave its nod to a bill to replace the ‘Punjab State Vigilance Commission Ordinance, 2020’. It will be introduced in the next Assembly session.

“The establishment of the multi-member Commission, aimed at bringing in more transparency and check corruption among public servants, was approved by the Cabinet last month through the ordinance. It is in line with the vision of Captain Amarinder Singh, who had steered the constitution of a similar commission back in 2006,” said an official spokesperson.
