Pune: The Pune Commissioner of Police Amitsh Kumar assured on Friday that the accused minor, whose rash driving killed two IT engineers in the early hours of Sunday, was in his senses at the time of accident and would be punished.

Amid growing chorus for justice for the deceased, Kumar told reporters that the cops were investigating the matter thoroughly. “We are making a watertight case. The allegations of preferential treatment given to the minor are being investigated by an ACP-rank officer… The victims will get justice and the accused will be punished,” he said.

Kumar added that efforts were on to try the minor accused as an adult. “We have started the process of appointing a special counsel in the case so that our side should be kept strong in the case in court. Police are on a stringent way to handle this case,” Kumar added.

The top officer also confirmed that an effort was made initially to frame the driver of the Porsche when it was actually being driven by the 17-year-old teen. “It is true the driver said he was driving the car… We are also investigating who pressured the driver to make that statement.”

Kumar asserted that the police had accessed CCTV footage of the accused drinking liquor in the pub before the accident.

He said the case was, therefore, not dependent only on the blood report. “We have other evidence also. He (the accused minor) was in his senses. It was not as if all of them were so drunk that they could not understand anything. They had full knowledge that due to their conduct, an incident like Section 304 could happen,” he added.

He also said that there was no truth in the allegations of the accused being given preferential treatment and promised to take action against police personnel for any negligence.

The Pune police on Thursday questioned the 17-year-old’s grandfather in connection with the horrific hit-and-run incident.

The minor ploughed his swanky Porsche into the two IT professionals, who were travelling on a bike, killing one on the spot while the other died in hospital.

The deceased Ashwini Koshta and Aneesh Awadhia were from Madhya Pradesh.
