Pune, Oct 27 (PTI) The Pune-based Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) has removed a book written by jailed activist Umar Khalid from its library after a social media post objected to its listing as a new addition.

The institute, an autonomous body under the Union Education Ministry, on Monday said it removed the book, ‘Fractured Communities: Adivasi Histories and the Politics of Power’, from its library to avoid “any misunderstanding or unrest”.

The book is based on Khalid’s PhD research, which examines two centuries of state formation, colonial rule, and tribal-state power relations in the Singhbhum region of present-day Jharkhand, with a primary focus on the Ho community.

The institute, in a statement, said its book collection is built through recommendations from IISER members and a committee that oversees the library’s functioning.

“On average, over 50 books from various areas are routinely added every month to the library. Regarding the book in question (written by Khalid), as soon as the matter was brought to the attention of institute authorities, it was decided to retract the book as a precaution in order to avoid any misunderstanding or unrest. The institute will examine what further action or steps can be taken,” the statement said.

The institute’s action came after a post on X said, “Umar Khalid’s thesis is added as a book at IISER, Pune. This is a central government institution for science research.”

Khalid, a former JNU student, was arrested in September 2020 and booked under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for being one of the “masterminds” of the February 2020 riots that had left 53 persons dead and more than 700 injured in Delhi. PTI SPK RSY GK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
