Puducherry, Sep 7 (PTI) The EC on Monday announced October 6 as the date for the by-election to the Thattanchavady Assembly constituency in Puducherry.
The seat fell vacant after AINRC leader and Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy resigned from the constituency in May and retained the Mangalam seat after winning both seats in the April 9 Assembly polls.
Rangasamy had contested simultaneously from Thattanchavady and Mangalam and subsequently vacated Thattanchavady, necessitating the by-election.
The AINRC leader announced a few days ago that former AINRC legislator Ashok Anand would be the party’s nominee for the by-election.
Thattanchavady is considered Rangasamy’s pocket borough. He defeated Congress leader V Vaithilingam, who is also the Lok Sabha member from Puducherry, in the Assembly polls.
Ashok Anand is the nephew of former Agriculture Minister Theni C Djeacoumar, also of the AINRC. Anand has already started campaigning in the constituency through wall writings.
The constituency witnessed a multi-cornered contest in the Assembly polls.
