Hyderabad, Oct 25 (PTI) A protest was held here on Sunday after an egg was allegedly thrown near a Goddess Durga idol immersion procession in the early hours, following which a case was registered, police said.

The incident occurred within the limits of Madannapet Police Station at around 2 am, prompting participants in the procession and some residents to stage a protest.

The egg fell near the procession, a police official said.

A case was registered under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage the religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs, he said.

“We received information that an egg was thrown when the Durga Mata idol procession was passing through a lane at around 2 am,” another police official said.

Senior police officials visited the spot and spoke to the procession organisers. One suspect was taken into custody, and police were examining CCTV footage, officials said.

The situation in the area was peaceful, and police urged the public not to spread rumours. Further investigation was underway, they added. PTI VVK SSK

Nine Years, Made Possible by Readers

In 2017, Shekhar Gupta started ThePrint with a simple belief: Indian readers want journalism that asks why and what next, not just what. And that enough of them would be willing to pay for good journalism.

Nine years on, that belief has held.

And, in these nine years, we’ve stayed true to our mission. We’ve been asking the follow-up questions, going beyond the headlines and explaining what’s actually happening. We’ve travelled across the country to bring you in-depth, visually-compelling stories from the ground.

It’s been nine years of readers choosing to make this possible. If you’d like to be one of them:
